Adam had a keen sense of humor and was a spiritual and caring soul. He was adored by his family, who tried valiantly to support him as he struggled with the epidemic that has been so destructive for those of his age bracket.
Please remember Adam without judgment, and know that all who struggle with addiction are human beings who are fighting a disease. If you have a loved one in your family who is struggling, please know that there is always hope.

He is survived by his wife and four children, one of whom maintains the family traditions of military service and working in pharmaceuticals. On 30 May, Ken McGlynn also left this life. He was one of three Falconian generations his father Ken Snr and Ken s two sons. Ken graduated. Home was in East Lindfield. Retirement came in , to a thirty acre property at Grose Vale to breed and show sheep and develop skills in dyeing and weaving.
Unfortunately, ill health forced Ken to move to Kurrajong Village, then to Bayview Gardens, where he passed away. Ken is survived by his wife, a daughter and two sons.
Dr David Fox died on 3 November. He studied medicine at Sydney University and followed a career in health care. He played first grade cricket for University, as an off spinner, representing Australian Universities and also touring India with Australian Old Collegians in We also note with regret the passing of these Falconians: George Meller , late of Northbridge, another pharmacist by profession; Brian Court , Robert Dennett , George Verey and Bob Hogarth Bob s father William was the first student entered on the roll in , so a remarkable link with the School s history is sadly broken with Bob s passing.
For many years the only female teacher on staff, she held a unique place in the Falcon Street story, as noted by Kim Eberhard in A Falcon Century: Nancy Deans, who taught French from to , remembered her early days under Head Master Tom Mason: I entered the School in There had been a woman there in and there were women teaching during the Second World War, but on the whole, the School was not used to having women around.
I had a separate staffroom the ladies toilet at the back of the Hall. The boys used to come there whenever they had torn pants or coats, assuming that, as a woman, I would be able to provide needle and thread. I did. The boys remember Nancy very well.
Very well liked and also respected. She figured out how to control us very quickly. Even if she was close to you, she would have you caned if you misbehaved first-hand experience! Politically aware and down to earth. She was one of the first teachers to speak to us as adults and really enjoyed a healthy debate.
Whilst the class was a bit rowdy, she had our respect and could silence us in a blink when things got out of hand. Nancy maintained contact with many of her students by way of hosting a popular annual gathering at her home in Castlecrag, also fondly recalled by many Falconians.
This is a wonderful recognition of a lifetime of achievement by Lionel, noted London-based musicologist. He has been at the forefront of research into French baroque music for a number of years. His most significant publication almost a lifetime s work is the Thematic Catalogue of the Works of Michel-Richard de Lalande , published by Oxford University Press with the support of the British Academy Lalande being the most important and prolific composer of sacred music at the court of Louis XIV.
Tony Hall retired from a long career in local government at the Council elections in September. Following nearly twenty five years as a councillor in Ku-ring-gai, including a term as Mayor, representing St Ives, Tony said family considerations influenced his decision to not seek another term.
He joined the Council in after working in the public service, including a long stint as secretary to the Minister for Local Government. A sometimes controversial and outspoken figure, he considers himself a reformist and one who enjoyed trying to help his constituents.
Described as a boy s own romp centring on the race to unlock an ancient cataclysmic prophecy, the action veers from a nuclear-armed Iran to the Vatican to the ruins of Machu Picchu, Adrian explains that there is more to it than an adventure story. It s written as a warning to our species, he says. Very few reviewers of my thrillers pick up on the subliminal messages. There s a lighter side of the novel but, based on my background as a counterterrorist chief, it also takes you deep inside the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
He later headed the ADF s. The Inca Prophecy is his fourth thriller and reflects many of his preoccupations and experiences. A provocative book in which every sort of dogma is questioned and every preconceived idea turned on its head. Sunday Mail A classy action thriller.
Emeritus Professor Graham Macdonald AM received an Honour in the General Division of the Order of Australia for “service to biomedical research in the areas of hypertension and renal disease, to medical education, to the promotion and awareness raising of organ donation, and as a mentor”. Also awarded the OAM was Dr John Skelton for service to community health through advocacy, respite and support services.
As such, he was acutely aware of the shortcomings in the available treatments for severe mental illnesses, primarily based on drugs that were and still are of limited effectiveness and that often have detrimental side-effects.
When severe mental illness struck a member of his own family in , he decided to investigate complementary treatments. In and , he attended Sydney workshops given by doctors from Canada and USA who had been researching and successfully implementing nutritionally-based biochemical treatments of mental illnesses since the s but which had not been recognised by mainstream psychiatry.
He sought out a Brisbane doctor who was applying these techniques on a complementary basis i. In , John visited USA along with a friend in similar family circumstances to inspect treatment centres there involved in researching and treating people with severe mental illness using such complementary nutritionally-based biochemical treatments.
They were so impressed with the results being achieved by a Chicago-based researcher, Dr William Walsh, that they decided to set up an organisation to make his work available in Australia. Bio-Balance Health Association Inc. Bio-Balance now has over Australian doctors trained in Dr Walsh s techniques and many thousands of Australian patients with mental, behavioural, autistic and. He was the inaugural Chair of the Mental Health Consumer Advisory Group advisory to the Queensland Health Minister from to He chaired the Steering Committee for the Queensland Alliance for Mental Illness umbrella organization for community organizations in the mental illness and psychiatric disability field in Queensland and was the inaugural Honorary Secretary from when the Alliance was incorporated in until leaving Queensland in John wishes to emphasise that he could not have achieved any of the above without the active support and encouragement of his wife Margaret or the dedication, active support and hard work of all the people with whom he has worked in the various organisations with which he has been involved.
Nan s hobbies are reading, theatre, sewing, oral history, politics including protesting and volunteering. She is actively involved in May Gibbs Nutcote Museum and enjoys meeting people, making friends and taking part in this great community of North Sydney.
She has one son and two grandsons. She recently reflected on her life in teaching. I had happy memories of going there in with my North Sydney Girls debating team.
We were received with the utmost courtesy. The boys won, but they did so with superior argument and great aplomb. As assistant librarian, I was able to teach English and History for more or less half the week. What I enjoyed most was the give and take of the classroom. I taught a modern history class of level two students who were often in trouble. When I asked them why their reply was usually What do you expect? We re the Tech Boys and so they were.
They had come from North Sydney Tech High after its closure and had felt or had been made to feel inferior to the real North Sydney Boys. Our relationship in the classroom was interesting lessons were never dull.
I knew lots of their problems, sometimes through a call to my home. Most of them became keen History students, as was reflected in. One indeed gained maximum marks. Taking over as full-time librarian meant I had to give up the classroom teaching which had been such a challenge and a joy, whether the students were exuberant first years or august seniors.
Happily, my involvement with staff and students went beyond being simply provider, advocate and keeper of books. As librarian, one came in contact professionally with all members of staff and all students. This was especially so when, for three years, I was Year 7 Advisor imagine grandsons at the start of each year. I hope I applied more of the former, though there were times when boundaries had to be set and met. Having known the boys well in the first year, it was really interesting to watch them grow up.
Last year I had the pleasure of hearing him at The Writers Festival, speaking of his latest publication. Making friends is especially important for Year 7 students, some of whom have to leave playmates behind.
I recall two very unhappy small boys, each complaining of the other s racial taunts. Ching Chong Chinaman and American seed-cake. I discussed the problem with each of them and then together, pointing out that it had probably been good to find someone they could attack verbally, as they had been attacked by others. They finally shook hands, agreed to respect each other s rights and so began a friendship which was to last throughout high school.
They came together as eighteen year olds to say goodbye to me. I reminded them of their Year 7 argument but neither had any memory of that occasion. Such bonding would be very welcome in our fraught world today. In a selective high school, there is quite often a problem for a boy who has achieved highly in primary school. A large frog in a small pond can find himself a small frog in a large pond even a lake for some a challenge, for others a drop in confidence.
An important task for me was to persuade them all that self achievement not competition was the ultimate goal. One had to appreciate the North Sydney Boys sense of humour.
At one time, a member of staff pinned up an enlarged copy of a letter I d written to the Sydney Morning Herald, critical of a decision made by the politician, Terry Metherell. She d added a complimentary or perhaps ironic alternative comment on the lines of Manefield the Mighty.
A student outdid her his addition was Methuselah s Mother understandable and, for his age group, apt. One could only be amused. I had some great video teams at North Sydney Boys. Two students, Ian Munro and Manuel Matzos became really professional and indeed went on to fine media careers.
When Jack Lang addressed the student body a memorable occasion he had the boys spellbound. My video team recorded the occasion. Later, when I couldn t find the tape I asked Manuel where it was. He answered airily Oh, we taped over it for the footie. Mind you their rugby coverage rivalled that of the ABC, but!!!
Another interesting project for me was building a Hall of Fame, honouring distinguished past students. The groundwork had been laid by an enthusiast. The answer: the lot. Letters were dispatched and many, as requested, supplied a photograph, CV and a statement about what each considered to be the highlight of his life and his greatest source of pleasure.
The answers from men who had achieved Australian and in many cases, world renown, were remarkable in their simplicity and humanity.
They ranged from meeting his wife on a bicycle tour of France, to discovering a new declension of a verb in ancient Greek, to the acquisition of like-minded friends, to sitting quietly contemplating the Southern Ocean. And there were the photographs: so many eighty year old lived in faces.
I fell in love with lots of them. I hope current students find inspiration in their achievements. Bushes; C. Pinions, Pulleys. Chair«, Tables, etc J. Sft 6ln x 6ft Glass-door Shirt Cabinet.
